Energy-Efficient A/C Installation

While it’s one of the more expensive home improvement projects, replacing an aging air conditioning unit is one of the easiest ways to make your home more energy-efficient. And, you’ll start seeing the savings instantly on your next electricity bill, and in fewer service calls and repairs.

If you’re going to replace your central A/C unit, it pays to do some research and select the most energy-efficient unit you can afford.

Air Conditioning Technology And Standards Have Changed

In 2015, new residential A/C standards went into place to establish minimum SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), and continue the move to eliminate the use of R-22 refrigerant, which is the original formula of ‘Freon’ that we now know is bad for the ozone. If you’ve had a refrigerant leak in recent years and needed a ‘recharge,’ you may have experienced sticker shock at the price to charge your older system because of the high cost of R-22. Newer A/C units use safer R-410A, which is readily available and cheap.

If your air conditioning unit is more than 10 years old, check the SEER rating on the condenser (the outdoor unit). In the southeastern United States, the U.S. Department of Energy mandates that new A/C units have a SEER rating of at least 14. Most older units have a rating of 6-9. Upgrading your unit to a more energy-efficient one could save you 20-40% on cooling costs.
